CBD, or cannabidiol, is a therapeutic, non-hallucinogenic component of the marijuana plant and the hemp plant (THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the hallucinogenic component). Industrial hemp which contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight is legal in all 50 states; CBD derived from industrial hemp containing less than 0.3% THC is therefore also legal. All of our products come with Certificates of Analysis (COA) relative to their individual batch numbers that indicate a THC content below the legal limit.

CBD is best known for its ability to reduce every type of inflammation. It works by modulating the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a master regulatory system in the body that enables two-way communication between body systems. ECS receptor sites are found in most cells in the body, including the brain, connective tissue, glands, and organs. The function of the ECS is to restore the body’s homeostasis (internal balance) so that all of your systems (particularly your immune system, nervous system, and endocrine system) can function optimally. Because you can’t overshoot balance (that would just mean imbalance again), more isn’t necessarily better, it’s just more (and more expensive, too).

Most of us have pretty damaged endocannabinoid systems, partly from environment, partly from lack of good nutrients (including hemp), partly from stress and other factors. It’s important to understand that when you start taking your hemp oil, it begins a repair process for your ECS so that it can start bringing your body back to a homeostatic state where it can function optimally. It’s therefore really important to take your hemp oil regularly, especially for the initial two-week period, after which time you can try reducing your serving size (more on serving sizes below). And once you get to a maintenance serving, CBD is an amazing molecule for prevention; the longer someone is on hemp oil, the deeper it works, going to work at the level of the nucleus and the mitochondria (the powerhouses of the cell, where energy is produced).

CBD also works in the body outside the endocannabinoid system as well, including regulating body temperature and perceptions of pain and inflammation; activating receptors that affect anxiety and mood; and raising levels of transporter molecules in the nervous system.

If you’re taking hemp oil for a specific symptom, you should notice a change within about an hour. We recommend you set your timer on your phone for one hour and “check in” with yourself to see how you’re feeling. If you don’t notice much change, increase the next serving size by one-half to one; if you don’t notice much change after that, increase the next one, and so on until you reach a therapeutic serving size (therapeutic meaning the best effect you are able to achieve). Once at a therapeutic serving size, stay there for one month (while your ECS repairs itself) and then try decreasing your serving size. If your symptoms return, it is an indication that there is still repair work that needs to be done; continue at your higher serving size and recheck in a month. At some point, when you reduce your serving size, your symptoms will not return. At this point, you can start playing a little bit with your serving size and see what is an optimal maintenance serving for you.

We are happy to consult with you on the recommended amount of hemp oil to take; in fact, some of our products (Functional Remedies) are only sold by medical professionals and we won't sell them without a consult first. For those of you with conditions that don't necessarily have symptoms associated with them, be sure to ask us about recommended serving sizes. We are happy to consult over the phone as well.

When someone doesn’t experience an improvement in their symptoms it’s usually because they aren’t taking their hemp oil according to the recommended dosing schedule. Check that you are taking it regularly (it stays in your system for 6-8 hours). If recommended twice a day, make sure you are taking it twice a day, if three times a day, take it three times a day. Hemp oil is a supplement, not a medication, and it works best when taken on a scheduled basis (at least or especially in the first two weeks) unless otherwise recommended. The other thing to make sure of for optimal effect is that you are taking a high-quality fish oil, which is important in the maintenance and repair of the ECS receptor sites.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS? Hemp oil has not been shown to cause any side effects. Having said that, some people at high serving sizes may experience side effects that are caused by hemp oil potentiating (making stronger) the side effects of prescription drugs they may be taking; when this happens, it is usually experienced as fatigue.

It’s very important to understand this, as hemp oil can be purchased in numerous places, including online. Hemp is what is known as a soil remediator, meaning that its job in the environment is to pull toxins (pesticides, herbicides, etc.) out of the soil. It’s therefore crucial that you know where your hemp oil hemp was grown and whether it is “clean” or not. In addition, a lot of companies use harmful extraction methods, including heat and chemicals, which damage the CBD molecule, impacting their effect and introducing potentially harmful molecules into your body.

Functional Remedies Hemp Oils are by far our best sellers. All of Functional Remedies products are made from their single-origin, full-spectrum hemp oil that uses a proprietary and gentle process called lipid infusion - basically, the hemp is "steeped," like a good tea, and various resulting concentrations are used in their products. The result of this is a full plant product that is more potent than any other product on the market. Functional Remedies owns its own farms and is a "seed-to-bottle" company that ensures 100% control over its entire cultivation process.

Elixinol CBD offers some of the highest quality hemp extracts in the world. Elixinol’s hemp oil is extracted from 100% organic, non-GMO Colorado hemp and is tested for the highest purity and potency. In addition, no heat or harmful chemicals are used in the extraction process. Elixinol is one of the top hemp oil companies in the country that uses this form of processing.

We also offer high-quality products (gummies, caramels, and pre-rolls/cigarettes) from Restorative Botanicals and Blue Ridge Hemp. Please visit their respective websites for more information on their farming practices, extraction methods, and products.

Because of the other cannabinoids present in hemp, hemp oil can very occasionally yield a false positive on a drug test. If you are subject to drug testing, be sure to disclose that you are taking hemp oil when you fill out the paperwork for the drug screening. Also, you may request a copy of the certificate of analysis for the specific hemp product you purchase, which shows that your product is below the legal limit for THC.
